It is certainly going to make a splash when someone walks into a casino and starts throwing around hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions of dollars, without batting an eyelid. Though there are, of course, few that can actually afford to act so flippantly with cash, which makes it all the more gobsmacking when such a thing actually occurs.
Those who have these obscene betting habits are the notorious high rollers, the few who walk among us that apparently have far more loot than they know what to do with.
But then, there are also high rollers who pass into a league of their own. Let’s call them mega-high rollers. Here is a list of mega-high rollers who hold a place of honour.
Kerry Packer’s name is well known, and not just because he happened to be one of the wealthiest individuals in Australia. Packer made his fortune as a media mogul, and apparently had so much money that throwing around vast sums in casinos was akin to buying a box of cigarettes for him.
In one case it is told that he walked into a casino in London, lost $15 million at a Roulette wheel, and didn’t so much as break a sweat. Another story tells of him putting down a stupefying $120 million on a coin toss, also without thinking twice about it.
If these stories are true, or if there is something more to them isn’t exactly known. What is known is that when Packer walks into a casino, the owners must really start breaking a serious sweat.
Lesser known than Packer, but an insane high roller none the less, Khashoggi made his fortune as an international arms dealer. He is said to have a near insatiable appetite for gambling, and will often drop millions at a casino in a single sitting.
However, legend also tells of one instance where Khashoggi went on a winning streak, and won so much cash that it actually impacted the venue’s earnings significantly. Apparently by as much as 20% for the quarter, which is a fact that can truly boggle the mind.
Sultan of Brunei
Last we have the Sultan of Brunei, who could have an entire book written about his outrageous spending habits. His car collection, which has featured in television documentaries, is so valuable as to be worth more than most will ever dream of making in a thousand lifetimes.
Of course, the Sultan is also a lover of gambling, and will often frequent venues in Las Vegas and London. Though, interestingly enough, the Sultan seems to be a bit more sensible with his spending, even if he is one of the wealthiest men in the world. Or, at least, he isn’t as flippant with his spending as the likes of Packer.
It is said that the Sultan drops around $1 million a day at his favourite venues, which although excessive is still far more restrained than others on this list.
